if that's the case, then
1) why do i get the same results on different terms?
2) why does this do what i'd expect:

but mutt does something else?
3) why does pine do what i expect but mutt does something else?
it seems that my term can distinguish bold from bright. if it has a
problem only when i use mutt, then i suspect the problem is in mutt.
