I use Maildir.  Occasionally use KMail also.  For compatibility with KMail I 
have:

set folder=~/Mail
set spoolfile='~/Mail/inbox'  # I have procmail deliver mail, so no need to have
                              #   spool set to /var/mail/$USER
set mbox=~/Mail/inbox
set mbox_type="Maildir"
set record=+sent  # If you use "outbox" then KMail tries to send mail from it
mailboxes ! +inbox +System +exim-users +mutt-users


the above works fine for me
