Just so you don't feel like this slipped into oblivion - I also have
this. mutt 1.5.4 and IMAP (dovecot)

This is what I see on port 143, when i move from mailbox =mi/rt to 
=lists/mutt-users (and I get a "new mail in =mi/rt" status). It's the last 
message in =lists/mutt-users.. and the first of a requery of all subscribed 
mailboxes.

Now looking at RFC 3501 - I believe there is a difference between
(RECENT) and (NEW).
