Thanks to those who responded.  Especially html2text was a fantastic
suggestion (now I need to modify it to turn graphics into ascii art).
But I learned yet again to read _all_ the man pages before posting to
mailing lists ;)

-localhost" behaves as much like what I wanted as a text-based browser
can do.  Now if only I can tell the damned thing to quit without
asking "Are you sure?" (yeah, I know, Use the Source...)
