oh.  (It would be nice if gnome-terminal's ostensible maintainers followed
the mailing lists where their program is used).  I have an impression (am
not online to verify this) that it's attempting to use UTF-8 if the system
is setup that way.  If it had documentation, I'd suggest reading that.

Anyway, it it's trying to do UTF-8, that would explain why 8-bit (codes
128-255) characters don't display as expected in response to setting
LANG to an ISO-8859-x locale.
