Just out of curiosity, what was your old Mutt (version and compile-time
options - "mutt -v" if you still have it installed), and what is your
new Mutt?  Also, are you using the color muttrc (grep color ~/.muttrc)?
If so, try running mutt without an RC file (mutt -n -F /dev/null) and
see if the problem persists.
