Does not seem like a mutt problem.

It could be a problem with your sendmail or postfix setup. Can you 
fetch mail with other mail clients? 

Do you use fetchmail to get the mail? What is the output of fetchmail 
-vv?

It could also be that your ISP's mail server is down for a period.

Or it could be a problem with your network, router or DNS setup.
