variables: index and pager

Hi:
Using ver 1.5.19 on linux 2.6.22-16-generic compiled with
sidebar patch.
Are there variables that define:
1)Current message (pager?)
2)Current mailbox (index?)

My intent is for scripts that can make message-specific or
mailbox-specific operations where the mailbox or the name
of the message (as it is defined by the file system) can be
passed to the script as an argument via a shell call.

If this is possible, references to documentation would be
welcome.
