Isn't mutt compressing the headers?  I would suggest to POP it and deal
with those large list locally.  I know there is a very noticeable difference
in opening the Debian-users list mailbox now that I've left IMAP for POP.
at about ~7000 mails mutt would take 2-3 seconds to open fetch and sort
the mailbox while using IMAP.. It's nearly instant now with mail kept
locally.
