| as I'm in a mailbox that gets new mail due to me fetching it, mutt
| nearly immediately displays it and resorts the index every $timeout
| seconds (since for me $timeout is lower than $mail_check).

I hadn't set it, so I presume it is 600 seconds. And quite frankly that
may be longer enough for me to never notice new mail. I've just set it
to 5, and will try the experiment again.

Any downsides to low timeout values? Interruption race conditions or
other issues?
