get "Message not modified!" when I try to edit a msg

In mutt 1.5.10 when from either mutt's index or pager I press "e" to
edit a message, the screen blinks and I see the error message "Message
not modified!"

What do I need to do to be able to be put into my editor to edit
a message (as always happened before) ?
