Mutt is querying your IMAP server asking which folders have unseen messages, and the server responds as it should. Imaps upports the "recent" response, that notifies the client about the number of recent messages.[1] Jørgen H. Fjeld recently submitted a patch[2] that adds the "imap_recent" option, which applies cleanly to the 1.5.13 release and CVS.
