I use:

macro   index   \eg     ":unset wait_key\n|fetchmail\n:unset wait_key\n" \
                                "Wake up fetchmail to check the email again"

note: if you run fetchmail as a daemon (I do), this invocation will use
the same parameters as the daemon.  IIUC, it merely tells the daemon to
work *now*.
