And on the topic of idle too long, I should have replied long before
now, since nobody else has. Sorry.

mutt is waiting on your IMAP server returning the results to a previous
command; the IMAP server seems to be waiting for mutt to send it data.
It looks as though the IMAP server is rather broken.

Banner, capabilities request information:

mutt tries to find out what the hierarchy separator is (commonly "." or
"/"):

 > a0002 LIST "" ""
 < * LIST (\NoSelect) "/" "/"
 < a0002 OK LIST completed

Mutt sends three commands at once, to find out basic information about
the INBOX, see if there are any postponed messages and to start using
the INBOX; the Oracle server only ever responds to the first of the
three commands:

 > a0003 MYRIGHTS "INBOX"
 a0004 STATUS "postponed" (MESSAGES)^M
 a0005 SELECT "INBOX"^M

 < * MYRIGHTS "INBOX" lrswidac
 Handling MYRIGHTS
 < a0003 OK MYRIGHTS completed
< * BYE Autologout; idle for too long
 > a0006 STATUS "INBOX" (UIDNEXT UIDVALIDITY UNSEEN)^M
mutt_socket_write: attempt to write to closed connection
mutt_socket_close: Attempt to close closed connection.

There's no reply to a0004 or a0005.

Ask your mail-server vendor if there's a known problem with pipelined
commands?
