Why not? It scales very well here with 

[16:55] ei:~% generate_mutt_mailboxes|wc -l
578

folders
(Using jfs on top of aes-encrypted dm-crypt volume on a g3-ibook
it takes less than 5 seconds).

That's true, it does not attemp in any way to sort them.
It uses your predefined order in Maildir/.

Nice, if you want to name all main folders explicit.
As I create/remove folders often, I am much to lazy and that's
why I do use it.

For pre-sorting and grouping in preferred order, which is different
from the Maildir structure, your script will be perhaps the better
solution.
