There's three things to check: is mutt configured to recognize "default",
what type of terminal are you actually using, and does the terminal
description contain the information.

For the last, ncurses & slang rely on using the SGR 39 and SGR 49 controls
which are usually in the "op" string of the terminfo (or termcap).
