I still don't really get what you want to do. Do you want the indicator to always have the same colors, regardless of the message it points to, or should it be transparent, so that e.g. the message's foreground color is preserved? (BTW: "default" depends on your terminal, so if black and white are switched, try specifying an explicit color.) I'd like to have the second thing, but that currently only works with the "bright" attribute. It would be nice if I could say "color indicator transparent cyan" to have a cyan indicator that honors my foreground colors. (Maybe one could use "default" for that.)
