This is, of course, almost certainly the wrong solution.  The behavior
was changed because it was both broken and inconsistent with how Mutt
handles other mail formats.  Ticket #3310 will likely result in this
behavior changing yet again... (one can hope).

The right solution is most likely to set mark_old.  This should make
Mutt behave mostly like you're accustomed to, except that unread mail
will be marked with 'O' instead of 'N' (which is more technically
correct).  Ripping apart your mail client to make it do things it
already does is usually not a good idea. ;-)
