Threading representation within Index

Hi,

I'm running Mutt 1.5.20 on Red Hat 5.3 and I'm trying to understand how
Mutt ascertains how to represent e-mails in the threaded view within the
Index.

Here's my issue: I forward Outlook e-mails to my Linux box (IMAP/POP are
not supported--don't get me started). When Outlook does the forwarding,
it alters some of the header. Therefore, I process all of my e-mails
via a script on the Linux box in an attempt to reconstruct the important
header lines (e.g., from:, to:, and subject:).

I am missing something though because the threading _representation_ is
not correct. For example, if the initial e-mail message is no longer in
the mbox, then all successive e-mails show the threading symbols
correctly but the entire subject text is depicted as well in the
index--for all successive messages belonging to the thread.

On the other hand, if the initial email message does exist in the mbox,
then successive e-mails to the thread do not show the subject text (as
is expected), but the first follow-up e-mail shows the '*' char in the
threading symbols--which I believe indicates part of the thread is
missing (or something).

I'm trying to find out what else I need to modify in the header so that
mutt can function properly.

Thanks in advance.
