The clone is updated by default to the, surprise, "default"
branch. I believe as a leftover from cvs conversion the current
HEAD is the branch "HEAD". You can update your clone by:

$ hg update -C tip

and you should get the most recent "devel" version, not the most
recent "stable" 1.4.

You can see the heads by doing "hg heads".

Perhaps the current version makes your ncurses prob go away.
