notifications about (async) events are always shown between two iterations of 
the main loop (i guess), usually two keypresses. i was never a fan of this, but 
here's a case where it actually fails: when you have a macro that resolves to 
multiple simulated key presses, you might see nothing more than a flash (if 
anything) in the status bar, because a message appears and disappears during 
the replay of the macro.
