Measurement Capabilities

Cypress, CA - December 1, 2006 - National LambdaRail announced today
the provisioning and availability of new research architecture for
novel network performance monitoring and measurement called NLRview.
Beginning in early 2007, researchers will be able to instrument NLR’s
nationwide infrastructure to study network performance and help
devise new solutions for intrusions, bottlenecks and fault isolation.
Utilizing NLR collected data as well as new shared research platforms
strategically located in NLR’s backbone, researchers can gain access
to actual critical performance data on the operational and
experimental infrastructure.
“Currently, network science is severely stunted by a data acquisition
crisis,” said Tom West, NLR’s President and CEO. “NLRview provides a
start in gaining new knowledge about the complex networks on which
the well-being of the US has come to depend. Network science needs
new opportunities for sound measurement and analysis to drive
policies that serve the public good.”
Developed through consultation with the research community, NLRview
is being deployed in two phases.
In January 2007, Phase 1 provides measurement nodes at the following
node sites:
Atlanta – Layer 3
Baton Rouge – Layer 2
Houston – Layer 3
Phase 2 will immediately follow with deployment of measurement nodes in:
Seattle
Chicago
Sunnyvale or Jacksonville – Layer 2
“We developed this new offering through interviews and discussions
with network researchers from around the nation,” said Peter O’Neil,
Senior Network Engineer, National Center for Atmospheric Research
(NCAR). “I’m pleased that NLRview is being developed based on
requirements from those whose careers depend on actually doing
network research.”
A call for participation will be issued to the network science
community in January, 2007. Preliminary information can be found on
NLR’s website.
