Dave:
What's interesting about these documents is that they reveal that
carriers which claimed their customers were immune to snooping --
for example, Qwest -- were indeed having their traffic tapped
as it passed through hubs where AT&T installed spy equipment.
This is a part and parcel of the internet model. You connect networks
together and while one network may not be snooping you, there simply
is no guarantee that the other network is not. In this case, were I a
Qwest customer talking to an ATT customer, and were ATT snooping
their network links, then anything I sent (as a Qwest customer) to
the ATT customer would be subject to snooping. However, if Qwest was
not snooping, and I were exchanging data with another Qwest customer,
then I'd be safe. This is about the maximum extent of the Qwest
statement. Unless of course, ATT was tapping the fiber lines or
copper of Qwest equipment co-located in ATT CO/PoPs. I don't think
that was the case.
The best thing to do, of cousre, is to encrypt. We, unlike
Qwest and most other carriers, offer encryption solutions to all
of our users.
Define what encryption? Do you offer end to end encryption solutions
to your customers? What if your customer is emailing me? Do you
encrypt all traffic going to your peers?
