To The Young Researchers of Japan
??The Internet has come to its adulthood.
??First, let me set the scene. If you look back over the last twenty
years, we've gone through a tremendous evolution in the networking
world. When we started the Arpanet, we were interested in computers. We
hooked them together and were interested in computers talking to
computers. What's happened over the last ten years is things have
changed dramatically. The network is the object of attention. Computers
are no longer the motivating items as they were, people and information
are. People want to talk to people; they want to look at information.
Nobody is interested just in computers talking to computers. I think
that's worth keeping in mind.
?? We are at a very critical crossroads right now. We could evolve in
several directions relative to what the future communications world will
looks like. There is a lot of pressure in the commercial world to turn
the Internet into a television set, to push passive interaction for
citizens, limited program availability, do your shopping, watch more
television. But we could instead produce a major change in the way
people work, the way people live and the way people interact. Where we
end up is still very much unknown, but you, the young researchers, will
be the ones who can determine much of the directions. Most of the major
steps in the network application area started as ideas of young
researchers working in small groups or alone. They were not the result
of large corporate developmental activities, they started as an idea in
some researcher's mind that grew and grew. We offer you the chance to
start down a similar road.
