Frankly I simply do not agree with this Public Call for Skype to release its specifications. Why bother?
Skype and Ebay are private companies and there is no particular reason they should have to disclose the security technology they are using if they dont want to.
The answer to Lauren concerns is simple ..dont use Skype. If you are looking for good peer to peer VoIP technology, just hold on, there are several new options underdevelopment using SIP or IETF RFC 3261.

Next week's Pulver VON conference should have several new announcements in this area.
One promising implementation is http://www.damaka.com/I do , however, congratulate the Skype people for selling out at the top of the market just as a flood of better competitors come on the market.
VoIP is not rocket science is becoming another rather trivial application on the Internet.
Lauren Weinstein's Blog Update: Public Call for Skype to Release SpecificationsSeptember 12, 2005 Greetings. As I noted in <ahref="http://lists.elistx.com/archives/interesting-people/200509/ msg00122.html">a recent IP posting, eBay's purchase of the popularSkype VoIP service (now official) leads to new concerns over theproprietary nature of Skype's security and encryption systems, which will now be under the control of an extremely large and powerful corporate entity. For eBay and Skype to have a chance of maintaining the goodwill and trust of Skype users, I call on Skype to forthwith release the specifications and implementation details of Skype's encryption and related technologies. This disclosure should ideally be made to the public, but at a minimum to an independent panel of respected security, privacy, and encryption experts, who can rigorously vet the Skype technology and make a public report regarding its security, reliability, and associated issues.
