Subject: The .museum wildcard
To ICANN's Security and Stability Advisory Committee:
During the present discussion of the inclusion of wildcard A records
in TLD zones, frequent reference has often been made to the wildcard
implementation in .museum. Further reference has been made to the
significance of the consent of the entities holding names in a zone
when assessing the appropriateness of placing a wildcard in it.
The presence of the wildcard in .museum is in full accordance with the
expectations of the museum community, as established in an extended
consultative process through the .museum Sponsor, the Museum Domain
Management Association (MuseDoma). The museum community is, however,
largely unaware that wildcard applications in TLDs have recently
become a subject of concern and debate.
The MuseDoma Board therefore felt it advisable to call the museum
community's attention to the present controversy and elicit broad
discussion of its significance for the on-going development of
policies relating to .museum. A statement has been prepared about the
origin and application of the wildcard A record in the .museum
zonefile, and elaborates upon MuseDoma's perceptions of the differing
conditions that attach to the .museum wildcard and the wildcards that
had recently been included in the .com and .net zones.
This statement was placed on the MuseDoma website at 1500 UTC, today,
and will be found at:
http://musedoma.museum/policy/wildcard/
Despite its having been prepared for the benefit of the museum
community, the statement has also been framed as a support document
for the SECSAC meeting on 7 October. I respectfully submit it for the
Committee's consideration and hope that it proves to be of use in the
very important task that you have undertaken.
Sincerely,
Cary Karp
