Does it change if you add the following to your muttrc?
set ascii_chars=yes
If it does, then we know the problem is your character set (i.e. the
font). If it doesn't change, then we know the problem is the colors.
Also, just to see if your terminal can do it, try running this:
echo -e '\033)0\016v\017'
You should get something that looks like an upside-down T if things
are working properly. If it doesn't... What encodings do you have
enabled (in the Preferences->Encodings tab) in the Terminal? And what
font are you using?

For the moment, you don't have to worry about those, just try this:
export TERM=nsterm
mutt
The files are actually stored in /usr/share/terminfo/, but that's
unimportant. If you end up customizing your nsterm-16color file, you
can simply install it in your home directory (in ~/.terminfo/... you
have to set the TERMINFO environment variable - read the tic man page
for details). You shouldn't need to customize it right away, though.
