saving sent message on IMAP Maildir

i am new to mutt, and for the most part, i have it functioning well enough to 
get me started.  my one caveat is, that when i send a message, it is not 
saved in my IMAP sent folder.

can someone tell me where to begin checking, so i can overcome this problem?  
im pretty sure its a problem with my config, but i have googled to my eyes 
want to fall out, and my config appears to be the same as many of the IMAP 
examples and man pages.

any tips on where to start, are greatly appreciated.
