It depends on how you installed it in the first place. Did you compile
it from source using the "./configure; make; make install" commands,
or did you use some package manager (such as fink or MacPorts)?

It's never removed when *compiling* the new version. But it's
typically simply overwritten when *installing* the new version (e.g.
via `make install`).
