The manual has this to say (note the second paragraph):

| GNU awk). For your convenience, we have included below a brief

So lower-casing the pattern should have the desired result.

BTW, you might try `tr A-Z a-z < ~/recipients_list` (or some such)
instead of invoking a Python script.
