Probably no one interested, but as a final follow-up I'll mention here
that _mago_ ($BB9(B) was intact in both mutt and nvi-m17n, but _ke_ ((I9(B) 
was
replaced with a "?", in both mutt and nvi-m17n.

There are just too many levels for me to ever understand this charset
business.
