It has something to do with your LOCALE settings.

I have the same issue with my Workstation (de_DE.UTF-8) and
Develstation (Xen instances with Unstable, Testing, Stable
and OldStable, where I can switch locales).

Maybe you create a wraper script which enforce mutt to run
with a fixes locale?
