Yeah, no, they don't mark anything, they just build up an internal
data structure (list) of addresses.

... I don't think that'll work. Mutt only checks the To,
Apparently-To, and CC headers for addresses to determine whether a
message will match ~l (and ~u) or not. Messages *must* be addressed to
a list in order to be considered to be associated with a list.
Now, it's probably fair criticism if you want to say that mutt should
also check List-Post and/or List-ID headers (if they exist), but for
good or ill, it does not currently (file a bug report). Other than
that, though, how do you think mutt *should* identify messages as
being from a list?
