Oh, then, with xpdf and pdftotext, one can do

application/pdf; xpdf /dev/stdin; test=test $DISPLAY
application/pdf; pdftotext -layout /dev/stdin -; copiousoutput

in mailcap, and doesn't even need to create a temporary file.
