I wrote Matthias off-list, and he wrote me back. I didn't realize you needed to run "prepare" when building from modified source (and not just when building from CVS). I've always just built from tarballs using ./configure --foo and then make / make install, after patching the source. If I first run prepare with the appropriate arguments, everything builds fine, even with the old versions of automake / autoconf. w
