Mutt Help for a newbie

Dear all,

I am trying to configure and use mutt by the help of a web link which I
found. The link is:

http://mutt.blackfish.org.uk/storage/

but with the instruction

echo $MAIL
I see a blank line.

I think I have to see 

Is something wrong here or is there sth I do not know. I have checked
the mutt manual but I think I need sth more like a tutorial advancing
step by step for a first time user like me.

So Can somebody help me to configure mutt.

Or you can give a step by step tutorial introduction link or briefly
explain the steps to perform.
