Why does this display_filter not work?

I have my display_filter set as follows:

set display_filter="grep -iv '\[--'"


This *should* effectively filter out the autoview inserts in my mail, since
by taking the raw mail file and using that command on it:

$ grep -iv '\[--' muttng-localhost-1000-9014-1498-92225b3d5cde18~

It does precisely what I want it to by filtering out the autoview lines.


Does anyone have any idea why this doesn't work in practice?
