can't compile mutt

I'm having a problem compiling mutt. I downloaded the developer's
version 1.5.9.

I ran ./configure ./make ./install

and got no errors.

However, I wanted to get utf-8 to work with mutt, so I followed the
instructions on this page:

http://www.rano.org/mutt.html

Specifically, I downloaded libiconv, slang, and  libutf. I built these
libraries with no problem.

Now I tried to build mutt again, and got this error:

checking whether iconv.h defines iconv_t... yes
checking whether this iconv is good enough... no
configure: error: Try using libiconv instead
