it is a native windows port from

the behaviour was very strange. I just did some tests and in the end I 
found it is a better idea to use the command line editor "edit"... which 
now works:

set EDITOR=edit

So I think it was just a problem of Ultraedit, and not of mutt.

Now there is another problem which I will put into a new thread.
