Mutt's great isn't it?
What you should be doing is using fetchmail to poll your servers.
Mutt is purely a user agent (MUA) and shouldn't be used for fetching mail from
other servers.
For the same token when you send mail with mutt, it doesn't use another mail
servers as SMTP server, like other mail programs (evolution, thunderbird), it
uses your own machines mail transfer agent (sendmail,postfix,qmail,exim).
my .fetchmailrc looks like this:
