LC_CTYPE or not?

Hi,

I see umlauts as octals in Mutt, eg. "Viele Gr\374\337e" instead of
"Viele Grüße". The FAQ tells me to set LC_CTYPE, which seems to work,
but I still have some questions about this:
- I use Debian Woody, and LC_CTYPE is set but empty after calling
'dpkg-reconfigure localeconf'. Is there another proper way to do this?
- On my Debian Sarge, LC_CTYPE is unset but Mutt is working fine. Is
there another environment variable affecting this?

tia,
Thorsten
