I've no idea whether this will help you or not, but you could take a
look at cooledit. I seem to remember that being referred to as a
"notepad-like" editor by the guy who wrote the rute book (or I might be
getting my wires crossed here somewhere).
Never used it myself though and I've no idea whether it does any or all
of what you want.
Just thought it might help.
