Changing temporarily to root?

I know I can do this by logging out and logging back in as root, but I hope
there's an easier way...

I need to attach a file in /var/log to a message in mutt. I need root
privileges to do it. Is there some way to enable mutt to temporarily get
root privileges to attach the file without having to go to the trouble of
logging out, logging back on as root, sending the message as root or else
making a copy of the file?
