I think I've learned how to navigate folders in Mutt.
Maildir directories are known to Mutt because they contain
new, cur and tmp subdirectories.
Mutt _will not_ decend into _maildir_ directories without messages
in cur, new or tmp.
Mutt _will_ decend into _regular_ directories,
that is, without cur, new and tmp.
So to be able to decend, you must delete cur, new and tmp,
making a non-maildir directory, and restart Mutt.
Then you will get a list of subdirectories and can decend.
To ascend to the next level up, type c followed by TAB.
To ascend to the top level, type c followed by ? to get
a list of the top directories.
It only took a week to figure this out.
It would be nice if Mutt let me decend into any folder I please.
Hope this helps someone else.
