My first advice would be: upgrade mutt to a current version ;)
It might well be that this problem is fixed in later versions, since you
are WAY behind with 1.5.5.1 being the current release ;)
I'm running Mutt 1.5.5.1+cvs20040105i and I don't have the problems you
described.
