Sure you can. Run your message through openssl and pipe it to mutt

Example for signing:

  openssl smime -sign -in message.txt -text \
    -signer ~/.smime/certificates/12345678.0 \
    -inkey ~/.smime/keys/12345678.0 \
  | mutt -s test recipient@xxxxxxxxxx

Same for encryption or both ... Same for PGP.
