To my best knowledge, *.dist files in FreeBSD are 'example
configuration files from the distribution'.
You can work without a .muttrc in your homedirectory, mutt will try to
read /etc/muttrc or /usr/local/etc/muttrc.
A .muttrc in your homedirectory is only to change mutts default
behaviour.
