I think your choice is between PGP and GnuPG basically. Of those two,
I'd go with GnuPG, it's being actively developed for *nix where PGP
isn't. It's also free software (free as in freedom and as in beer).

So then the question is, have you gotten started with gpg at all yet?
Have you generated a key or any of that good stuff? If not, you
probably want to start by reading through the basic gpg docs and
beginner HOWTO's on gnugp.org.

Once you've created a keypair, getting things working with mutt is
pretty straightforward. You can just source the gpg.rc file from the
mutt tarball.

There are other settings to be aware of, the main issue that always
comes up is PGP/MIME vs. traditional (inline) PGP. The archives are
replete with discussions of this. By default, mutt uses PGP/MIME,
which is defined by RFC 3156. Some MUA's and list archiving software
doesn't know how to handle this. If you have to deal with these MUA's
or lists, you might want to take the time to either send traditional
PGP to these lists using some sort of hooks or just send traditional
PGP all the time. That's done by setting $pgp_create_traditional.

Good luck and have fun with it.
