wrapping index lines

I have a terminal (cellphone) which is fairly narrow (59 columns at best).
I'd like to set up mutt's index so that I can see a whole lot more than
that per message. Really, I want each message to use two lines in the
index. I tried using \n and \012 and \015 in index_format to no avail. Is
there any way to do what I'm trying to do?
