Maildir question

There seem to be two ways to implement a directory hierarchy in a
maildir environment:-

1 - Conventional directory hierarchy. A mailbox may contain both
the cur, tmp and new subdirectories *and* further maibox
    subdirectories.

2 - The dotted directory naming convention used by Courier (and
others) where each named mailbox is given a name like
    topLevel.nextLevel.bottomlevel and these directories contain
*only* cur, tmo and new subdirectories.

Can mutt cope with both these approaches? Are both these approaches
'correct'?
